TWO WAYS OF KNOWING

In this paper I am going to talk about the two sides of the brain, which are perplexing people somewhat. Here we are not denying that there is a mind that does the thinking, nor the possibility that there is a spirit that controls the mind. However we have to interact with the body and control it. The body is controlled via two brain centers. Some people are genetically right handed, and some are genetically left. A proportion of both left-handers and right-handers, may well be running on the wrong control center.
So the two sides of the body are to a certain degree specialized. For example, we will look at what the two hands do. Let us consider a right handed person, and make the necessary adjustments, in terms of left handed people.
A person's right hand controls fine detailed movement, such as writing, adjusting mechanisms, controlling tools, or doing anything, which requires sequential action as such. Whereas the left hand establishes an anchor point or reference point. It may hold on to something that we are working on, so there is a relative motion between the left hand, or reference point, and the right, so the action is grounded in reality. This is an analogy for the two modes of perceiving: the way of the left and the way of the right.
The way of perceiving, which is educated most in this culture, goes with the right hand - the left hand having been called the kack hand or the sinister hand. So two modes of knowing, two modes of perceiving the world and to deal with the material of this world exist. One is potential, the other one manifest - which in most people is the right hand side which corresponds to the left brain. You might say that the left brain is the chalk and the right brain the blackboard, when both sides of the brain are working together.
Functional Differences
If we contrast these two sides, the left side is linear, it can only deal with one thing at a time. It forgets rather rapidly, and a person who is learning in that mode may be called a 'stringer' - he will have to learn one thing very carefully, then the next and then the next. A person almost totally unable to take an overview was described by Luria, the great Russian neurologist. He describes this in his book 'Man with a Shattered World'. He talks of a soldier who received a bullet wound through the head, and the bullet damaged severely the right side of the brain, yet the man survived, but with very strange experiences. For example, while eating soup, when he concentrated on the soup the spoon disappeared; when he concentrated on the spoon, the soup disappeared; and when he concentrated on the flavor, the whole room disappeared. The left hemisphere is organized to deal with one detail at a time, whereas the right side deals with many details and provides the context. This is necessary too, otherwise the creation and perception of music would not be possible.
The left hemisphere can only deal with one note at a tine, whereas the right hemisphere looks at the overall context: that which has gone before, the immediate history of that piece of music, and the anticipation of what will happen as the music unfolds. A person without a right hemisphere could tune a guitar against a pitch pipe; he may be able to play the odd note if it is written down on a bit of paper, and in a very artificial way play some very simple tunes, but this would be done at a robotic level. Whereas with the other side of the brain, a person may easily translate intention into action, at the non-verbal level. Both types of consciousness are necessary, in most activities.
Both in children and primitive people, the degree of differentiation between the two sides of the brain is slight. So both sides are doing something like the same work; the difference is a matter of degree. And according to the German Philosopher Ernst Cassirer, many primitive people are unable to tell a lie, because this requires standing outside of oneself, to have an abstract perspective, so one can have feelings about one's thoughts or thoughts about one's feelings. A person with specialized hemispheres is able to have an abstract perspective, so lying is something he can do easily.
You may say, well why tell a lie? When we write a story or invent something, initially -we are telling a lie. We are creating a pretend universe. The classic form of this way of thinking would be, for example, 'were I to do so-and-so, if that, then that'. So we have one side of the brain which is capable of inventing, and the other which is trying to recreate reality. Both sides draw on much more primitive structures, such as the limbic system, which produces the imagery, much in the way of a video recorder, but in a different manner. The left side can isolate out a detail, which is a useful skill, so long as this skill does not become compulsive, whereas the right side is unable to deal with details; it looks at the general plan.
A person who is right brain dominant has a totally different learning style. When they are learning a subject, they will read every book in the library about it, and read everything else, talk to everybody and then, only gradually will a picture of what they are learning emerge out of the mist for them. You may say that one side of the brain is concerned with plan and the other with putting it into action. No single side of the brain, operating in isolation, is right. Full consciousness arises from an integration of the two sets of mental processes, which involve a cooperative or collaborative relationship between the two sides of the brain.
Experiential Differences
According to depth psychologists such as Arthur Janov and Matte Blanco, we may retreat into left brain modes of perceiving and acting, in which mode our emotions are memory, rather than what is being directly experienced, because the traumatic material is being stored in the right side of the brain in such a way that it is inaccessible. By splitting the storage of the memory in this way, we have a verbal description of the events that we can access, but we are unable to experience the pain and emotions of the memory.
Another person, who is in the right brain mode, may well have pain, emotion and effort visible; however, he is unable to access the intentions, decisions, conclusions and other verbally and conceptually stored material in the left, as this side of the brain is suppressed below the boundaries of consciousness. For example, when a person is in an extreme emotion, such as love, rage or grief, the words to express this do not come easily or they may not come at all.
Perceptual Differences
There are differences in the visual imagery between a left brain dominant person and a right brain dominant person. Left brain imagery tends to be small, and it is experienced as if it is inside the head, and it moves with you, whereas the imagery of a right brain nature, due to some peculiar arrangement of the balance, is such that if you turn your head, the imagery will tend to move, as though you were seeing something in the real world. If you moved your head to the left, the imagery would appear to move to your right.
For example, I can imagine with my eyes closed a chair that I am pointing at, and as I move my head, it will remain where my finger is pointing. The left brain imagery will tend to move with me, as I move around. So one sort of imagery can be described as grounded, whereas the other is ungrounded.
In perception, the right side of the brain is concerned with the spaces enclosed by objects. For example, I am looking at some plants that are in front of me, and I can see the various spaces exist between the leaves. This creates another set of shapes beyond the conventional. The left side would tend to see the thing itself, the figure rather than the ground. Likewise, I have done some experiments with some playing cards. The hearts and the diamonds were black, and the clubs and spades were red. When these cards were given to people who were left brain dominant, they actually experienced visible disturbance when they were trying to play with these cards, because it interfered with what is called conventional perception. Right brained persons have no difficulty playing with these types of cards.
Integration of the Two Sides
True higher creative thought arises from an integration of the two sides of the brain. Einstein said, "I will do a flight of fantasy and work on some thinking, which is not thinking as you would understand it, but a combinatorial play of some types of imageries and sensory feelings. Only when this activity comes to some resolution, would I fumble in the other side of my head for words and for algebraic statements, which would permit me to communicate these insights to others".
True thinking, which stands behind our conscious thinking, is non-verbal. A person, who is right brain dominant, when both sides are cooperating, uses words as his servants, whereas a person who is left brain dominated, frequently tends to be governed by words, belief systems and symbol systems, often to the exclusion of external reality.
Diagnosis
Some work has been done with a device, similar to a Psycho-Galvanometer, in one of the London hospitals in 1985. The meter was used as a diagnostic device, to find the discrepancies between what we would call the left hand measure of body resistance and the right hand measure. These differences have been found to represent particular clinical types. The Manic type has a significantly lower resistance on the left hand - the right brain is more highly aroused; and the Schizoid/Schizophrenic type has a much lower resistance on the right hand - the left brain is more highly aroused. This indicates either functional imbalance between the two sides, as a consequence of early traumatization or actual organic damage, resulting from illness or accident. In either case, when there is a discrepancy of magnitude between the electrical resistance of the left hand and the electrical resistance of the right, you will find an underlying problem. Summary
The right half of the brain controls the left side of the body, and the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body. Often people can be described as left brain dominant or right brain dominant: for example, artists tend to be right-brained, and mathematicians left-brained. The most able people, however, can easily switch from one type of thinking to the other, as their situation demands. A large part of Mind Development is directed at helping students to gain ability in both styles of thinking. If you examine a drawing of the brain, you will see it is divided into two sides. In the last two decades, research has clearly shown that each side of the brain has a unique set of mental abilities, or styles of thinking. These are shown in the table following.

Note: It is unlikely that you would find a person that was totally left-brain dominant or totally right, outside of an institution. Such a person would find it impossible to survive. Most people, however, will have an imbalance, in one direction or the other, usually to the left. In many cases, a person would benefit through a job or an activity that would place some stress on the under-used side of the brain.

Heart And Hands

At Denver there was an influx of passengers into the coaches on the eastbound B. & M. express. In one coach there sat a very pretty young woman dressed in elegant taste and surrounded by all the luxurious comforts of an experienced traveler. Among the newcomers were two young men, one of handsome presence with a bold, frank countenance and manner; the other a ruffled, glum-faced person, heavily built and roughly dressed. The two were handcuffed together.

As they passed down the aisle of the coach the only vacant seat offered was a reversed one facing the attractive young woman. Here the linked couple seated themselves. The young woman's glance fell upon them with a distant, swift disinterest; then with a lovely smile brightening her countenance and a tender pink tingeing her rounded cheeks, she held out a little gray-gloved hand. When she spoke her voice, full, sweet, and deliberate, proclaimed that its owner was accustomed to speak and be heard.

"Well, Mr. Easton, if you will make me speak first, I suppose I must. Don't vou ever recognize old friends when you meet them in the West?"

The younger man roused himself sharply at the sound of her voice, seemed to struggle with a slight embarrassment which he threw off instantly, and then clasped her fingers with his left hand.

"It's Miss Fairchild," he said, with a smile. "I'll ask you to excuse the other hand; "it's otherwise engaged just at present."

He slightly raised his right hand, bound at the wrist by the shining "bracelet" to the left one of his companion. The glad look in the girl's eyes slowly changed to a bewildered horror. The glow faded from her cheeks. Her lips parted in a vague, relaxing distress. Easton, with a little laugh, as if amused, was about to speak again when the other forestalled him. The glum-faced man had been watching the girl's countenance with veiled glances from his keen, shrewd eyes.

"You'll excuse me for speaking, miss, but, I see you're acquainted with the marshall here. If you'll ask him to speak a word for me when we get to the pen he'll do it, and it'll make things easier for me there. He's taking me to Leavenworth prison. It's seven years for counterfeiting."

"Oh!" said the girl, with a deep breath and returning color. "So that is what you are doing out here? A marshal!"

"My dear Miss Fairchild," said Easton, calmly, "I had to do something. Money has a way of taking wings unto itself, and you know it takes money to keep step with our crowd in Washington. I saw this opening in the West, and--well, a marshalship isn't quite as high a position as that of ambassador, but--"

"The ambassador," said the girl, warmly, "doesn't call any more. He needn't ever have done so. You ought to know that. And so now you are one of these dashing Western heroes, and you ride and shoot and go into all kinds of dangers. That's different from the Washington life. You have been missed from the old crowd."

The girl's eyes, fascinated, went back, widening a little, to rest upon the glittering handcuffs.

"Don't you worry about them, miss," said the other man. "All marshals handcuff themselves to their prisoners to keep them from getting away. Mr. Easton knows his business."

"Will we see you again soon in Washington?" asked the girl.

"Not soon, I think," said Easton. "My butterfly days are over, I fear."

"I love the West," said the girl irrelevantly. Her eyes were shining softly. She looked away out the car window. She began to speak truly and simply without the gloss of style and manner: "Mamma and I spent the summer in Denver. She went home a week ago because father was slightly ill. I could live and be happy in the West. I think the air here agrees with me. Money isn't everything. But people always misunderstand things and remain stupid--"

"Say, Mr. Marshal," growled the glum-faced man. "This isn't quite fair. I'm needing a drink, and haven't had a smoke all day. Haven't you talked long enough? Take me in the smoker now, won't you? I'm half dead for a pipe."

The bound travelers rose to their feet, Easton with the same slow smile on his face.

"I can't deny a petition for tobacco," he said, lightly. "It's the one friend of the unfortunate. Good-bye, Miss Fairchild. Duty calls, you know." He held out his hand for a farewell.

"It's too bad you are not going East," she said, reclothing herself with manner and style. "But you must go on to Leavenworth, I suppose?"

"Yes," said Easton, "I must go on to Leavenworth."

The two men sidled down the aisle into the smoker.

The two passengers in a seat near by had heard most of the conversation. Said one of them: "That marshal's a good sort of chap. Some of these Western fellows are all right."

"Pretty young to hold an office like that, isn't he?" asked the other.

"Young!" exclaimed the first speaker, "why--Oh! didn't you catch on? Say--did you ever know an officer to handcuff a prisoner to his right hand?"

Labor Day:

Labor Day is a holiday honoring working men and women.
It is observed on the first Monday in September.
The United States, Puerto Rico and Canada all observe the first Monday of September as Labor Day. Australia celebrates the Eight Hour Day commemorating their successful struggle for a shorter work day and Europe celebrates Labor Day on May 1.
The first observance of this holiday in the United States came in September of 1882
when a
Labor Day Parade
was held by the
Knights of Labor in New York City.
Matthew M. Maguire and Peter J. McGuire contributed greatly to this event and are credited as the founders of this holiday observance, as they were the first to suggest there be a day of observance honoring working people here in the United States. Peter J. McGuire, a New York City carpenter, helped found the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners.
Two years later, in 1884 the group held a parade on the first Monday of September and a resolution was adopted to hold all future parades on that day and to designate the day, Labor Day.
In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day a national holiday.



The day is usually observed with cookouts, weekend trips, fun events or just plain relaxation. Some labor organizations and businesses hold gatherings for their members and workers to celebrate the day together.

Electronic eyes and ears can follow your every move

Darryl and Donna* had a good life until the new computer arrived in their Manitoba home in October 2000. Soon afterwards, Darryl’s spouse of 15 years began, as he puts it, “acting funny.” Housework went undone, he says, while Donna sat at the screen by the hour. Suspicion finally overcame him. Charging $105 to his credit card, Darryl downloaded some software from the Internet and installed it on the PC. Then he went to bed and left the machine to his wife.
“I got up at five the next morning,” Darryl says. “I turned on the computer, and I saw what I didn’t want to see.” The program from Florida-based SpectorSoft Corporation had done exactly what it promised. In heartbreaking detail, it had recorded every remark Donna typed into a chat window, including the explicit sex talk she had shared with several men.
Welcome to the age of anywhere, anytime, anybody surveillance. Technologies first conceived by national spy agencies and the military are now being retooled as security products for home and business. Civilian programmers have been creating new breeds of spyware to exploit the inherent vulnerabilities of the digital environment. And as hardware prices drop and software flits effortlessly across the Net, privacy-busting tools are turning up in the 7-Eleven, the office cubicle—and the bedroom. To keep them at bay, the future may be one in which every citizen has a secret key to encrypt his cyberthoughts, and multiple identities to conceal his true one.

While it is true that new technologies for surveillance and concealment have naturally found fans among criminals, creeps and perverts, companies are also spying—on their workers and their customers. The American Management Association says two out of every three major U.S. companies monitor employees on-line. And governments in several countries have given themselves new rights to snoop on their citizens. Even as fearless a fellow as former RCMP commissioner Norman Inkster, who now runs KPMG Investigation and Security Inc., admits, “There’s a point where one needs
to be concerned Big Brother is watching.”
Unlike the malignant state agency of George Orwell’s fiction, though, the new millennium has democratized surveillance. Anyone can spy. That is particularly evident in the plummeting price and widening availability of covert audio- and video-surveillance devices. A video camera about the size of a pack of matches retailed for $800 a decade ago but today costs less than $150. Sound recorders connected to microphones hidden in pens go for under $200. Drop in at Spy-Central, in Vancouver—or any store like it in any Canadian city—and you might stroll out with a charming art-deco mantel clock. Concealed behind the face is a video camera. Cost: about $300.
Other new technologies are extending the capabilities of those ubiquitous video security monitors. By one estimate, they record the image of every urban Canadian up
to 15 times a day. Biometric software can then be used to match the images to vast police databases of photo IDs. Indeed, many casinos deploy similar software to identify and keep out known cheats. At last January’s Super Bowl in Tampa, Fla., authorities scanned the faces of 100,000 people entering the stadium, identifying 19 possible matches to individuals with criminal records.
Your cellular phone can also be used to track you down. Several companies are racing to perfect location technology. When a person places a call, carriers record which cell, or transmitter area, the call is coming from. The telephone number of the caller, the number called and the length of the call are logged for billing. With a court order, all of these data can provide a record of someone’s movements. With some effort, phones can be tracked even when not in use, as long as they are turned on.
Even now, the exact location of a wireless call can be pinpointed to within three metres using a built-in Global Positioning System, or within 30 to 60 metres using triangulation on the cell network. Fleet companies in Calgary recently tested Cell-Loc equipment to track their staff during business hours.

But it is the Internet where privacy’s defences are most porous. However you access the Net, you do it through an Internet service provider (ISP). If an ISP wants to, it can reveal the Internet address of everyone you send an e-mail to, the contents of the e-mail and every file you download, and the address of every site you visit.
From legitimate scrutiny by employers to the schemes of sexual predators, the Net’s digital underpinnings and culture of anonymity expose users to a jungle of on-line risks. “Cyberstalking is a very big complaint,” says Det. Bruce Headridge of the Organized Crime Agency of British Columbia, based in Vancouver.** The number of complaints is increasing all the time, he says, frequently after a contact made in a chat room turns sour. A common stalker ploy is to send copies of indiscreet e-mails to employers, in hopes of having the victim fired.

The net has also unleashed a spate of “lurings”—instances of older men, and occasionally women, using the Internet to target children, whom they then persuade to leave home and join them. In one case, a 58-year-old man from Oregon introduced himself to a 12-year-old boy from the B.C. interior as another 12-year-old, eventually persuading his target to buy a bus ticket to Seattle. The youngster’s father intervened before he left home, and the Oregon man was arrested. In another case, a 21-year-old Saskatchewan woman convinced a 14-year-old B.C. boy to run away from home with her; they lived in her car until the boy’s parents and social workers were able to intervene. In each case, the lurers took advantage of anonymity on the Internet to disarm their victims in the artificial intimacy of on-line chat rooms.
“If a stranger came to your door wearing a bag over his head,” suggests Det. Noreen Waters of the Vancouver police, “and said he wanted to spend hours with your child in his or her bedroom with the door closed, would you let him in? Yet every day, parents are allowing strangers into their kids’ bedrooms through the Internet.”
Misuse of e-mail need not be criminal to be painful. Canadian Forces naval Capt. David Marshall lost his command of CFB Esquimalt on Vancouver Island after flirtatious e-mails exchanged with a woman other than his wife surfaced in a local paper.
Such misfortunes reflect as much on individual judgement as on the nature of the Net. But determined digital intruders have more-specialized tools at their disposal. Back Orifice is one program hackers use to seize control of a PC. Once activated, Back Orifice lets the remote hacker treat the target computer as his own, accessing password files and even controlling attached devices.

Criminals hide their own identity on-line; they can also steal yours—or at least enough personal information to masquerade as you. Data banks containing credit-card information are high on hacker target lists—and are routinelybreached. Last January police heard from three Halifax computer companies that someone was using credit-card accounts to make unauthorized purchases. The card numbers it turned out, had been stolen from databases in the United States and Britain—by hackers in eastern Europe.

Not everyone sneaking around on-line is a bad guy, however. The same anonymity that empowers predators on the Net can be put to use by their pursuers. Former B.C. MLA George Kerster exchanged e-mails with someone who claimed to have a “curious and un-developed” 11-year-old girl available for sex. In subsequent e-mails, Kerster expressed his interest in meeting her. On January 12, 1999, Kerster met a woman claiming to be the girl’s mother at a Vancouver fast-food joint and followed her to a hotel to consummate the deal. It was there that he learned he had been corresponding with police. A B.C. Supreme Court justice found Kerster guilty of attempting to obtain the sexual services of a minor.
Police in every major country have pressed for new powers to intercept what travels over the Internet. In 1999 Australia gave its authorities the right to hack into suspects’ computers. More recently, British and U.S. police won government blessing for their plans to install eavesdropping devices on Internet service providers’ premises. The devices—ominously code-named Carnivore in the American case—act much like telephone taps, allowing police to intercept e-mail messages to and from a specified Internet address. Canada has yet to give its police similar authority, but a report declassified in 2000 by the normally secretive federal Communications Security Establishment (CSE), and obtained by Southam News, argued that e-mail interception “may be required” for the CSE to protect government computer networks against viruses.

Businesses, too, have found uses for on-line surveillance. Some are controversial, but most are sanctioned by law. Many web sites place tiny scraps of text, called cookies, onto the computers of Web surfers who visit. The text contains information that identifies the computer so the site can recognize it as a repeat customer if it returns. But some companies can also use cookies to track a computer’s visits to other web sites and record the user’s surfing habits.

Whatever your e-store is up to, you boss’s right to spy on you is, legally speaking, well-nigh unassailable. “It has always been cause for dismissal if you’re not using company time to
do company work,” explains Paul Kent-Snowsell, a Vancouver lawyer who specializes in Internet cases. During the summer of 2000, Dow Chemical Co. fired 61 employees in Texas and Michigan for using their computers to circulate pornography—joining the 27 percent of surveyed U.S. companies that have fired workers for e-mail or Internet abuse.
There may be no simple defence against being spied on. But tools are emerging to reduce the vulnerability of private e-mail and to help solve the flip side of the “lurer” problem: how to prove you are who you say you are on-line. Several vendors sell software that will encrypt digital documents and, if you like, sign them with a nearly unbreakable code identifying you as the sender. Ottawa, meanwhile, plans to begin a pilot project later this year that will enable citizens to access selected federal services on-line using “digital signatures” to confirm the identity of the individual and make transmissions more secure.
For those who don’t wish to be followed on-line by trails of e-commerce cookies, so-called anonymizing software can create digital pseudonyms that allow subscribers to surf the Web anonymously. Alex Fowler, senior director of information policy for Canada’s Zero-Knowledge Systems Inc., sees it becoming the norm for every citizen to maintain multiple identities for on-line activities—one to shop, another to deal with government and perhaps several more for use in chat rooms.
Consumer versions of corporate firewalls that deter some kinds of intrusion are available. Internet Security Systems BlackICE, Norton Personal Firewall, McAfee.com Personal Firewall and Zero-Knowledge’s Freedom are among popular software packages that protect home-PC users from programs like Back Orifice. Many such home firewalls also let users disable commercial cookies.

Alex fowler, the privacy software developer, and Norman Inkster, the former Mountie, share a common fear. Both worry that the reach of surveillance technology is expanding faster than most ordinary citizens know—and that it could soon become more frighteningly all-embracing. To Inkster, controlling the criminals means accepting new means of surveillance, but with checks and balances to protect privacy. “In the past, we could sometimes make a certain assumption of privacy,” Inkster reflects, “because we knew the technology couldn’t be there. Now the technology is there. The question becomes, Will the law ever catch up?”
To retired Toronto businessman Wilson Markle, who has installed software on the PCs of his two children to monitor what they access on-line, there’s no doubt: The race is over and technology has won. “Anybody who doesn’t have a thing to hide has no problem,” he says. “Those who do have something to hide will have a problem. I take comfort in that.”

Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,

Is it snowing where you are? All the world that I see from my tower is draped in white and the flakes are coming down as big as pop-corns. It's late afternoon--the sun is just setting (a cold yellow colour) behind some colder violet hills, and I am up in my window seat using the last light to write to you.

Your five gold pieces were a surprise! I'm not used to receiving Christmas presents. You have already given me such lots of things-- everything I have, you know--that I don't quite feel that I deserve extras. But I like them just the same. Do you want to know what I bought with my money?

It was a very low motive, if you must know it, that prompted the silk stockings. Julia Pendleton comes into my room to do geometry, and she sits cross-legged on the couch and wears silk stockings every night. But just wait--as soon as she gets back from vacation I shall go in and sit on her couch in my silk stockings. You see, Daddy, the miserable creature that I am but at least I'm honest; and you knew already, from my asylum record, that I wasn't perfect, didn't you?

To recapitulate (that's the way the English instructor begins every other sentence), I am very much obliged for my seven presents. I'm pretending to myself that they came in a box from my family in California. The watch is from father, the rug from mother, the hot water bottle from grandmother who is always worrying for fear I shall catch cold in this climate--and the yellow paper from my little brother Harry. My sister Isabel gave me the silk stockings, and Aunt Susan the Matthew Arnold poems; Uncle Harry (little Harry is named after him) gave me the dictionary. He wanted to send chocolates, but I insisted on synonyms.

You don't object, do you, to playing the part of a composite family?

And now, shall I tell you about my vacation, or are you only interested in my education as such? I hope you appreciate the delicate shade of meaning in 'as such'. It is the latest addition to my vocabulary.

The girl from Texas is named Leonora Fenton. (Almost as funny as Jerusha, isn't it?) I like her, but not so much as Sallie McBride; I shall never like any one so much as Sallie--except you. I must always like you the best of all, because you're my whole family rolled into one. Leonora and I and two Sophomores have walked 'cross country every pleasant day and explored the whole neighbourhood, dressed in short skirts and knit jackets and caps, and carrying shiny sticks to whack things with. Once we walked into town--four miles-- and stopped at a restaurant where the college girls go for dinner. Broiled lobster (35 cents), and for dessert, buckwheat cakes and maple syrup (15 cents). Nourishing and cheap.

It was such a lark! Especially for me, because it was so awfully different from the asylum--I feel like an escaped convict every time I leave the campus. Before I thought, I started to tell the others what an experience I was having. The cat was almost out of the bag when I grabbed it by its tail and pulled it back. It's awfully hard for me not to tell everything I know. I'm a very confiding soul by nature; if I didn't have you to tell things to, I'd burst.

We had a molasses candy pull last Friday evening, given by the house matron of Fergussen to the left-behinds in the other halls. There were twenty-two of us altogether, Freshmen and Sophomores and juniors and Seniors all united in amicable accord. The kitchen is huge, with copper pots and kettles hanging in rows on the stone wall-- the littlest casserole among them about the size of a wash boiler. Four hundred girls live in Fergussen. The chef, in a white cap and apron, fetched out twenty-two other white caps and aprons-- I can't imagine where he got so many--and we all turned ourselves into cooks.

It was great fun, though I have seen better candy. When it was finally finished, and ourselves and the kitchen and the door-knobs all thoroughly sticky, we organized a procession and still in our caps and aprons, each carrying a big fork or spoon or frying pan, we marched through the empty corridors to the officers' parlour, where half-a-dozen professors and instructors were passing a tranquil evening. We serenaded them with college songs and offered refreshments. They accepted politely but dubiously. We left them sucking chunks of molasses candy, sticky and speechless.

So you see, Daddy, my education progresses!

Don't you really think that I ought to be an artist instead of an author?

Vacation will be over in two days and I shall be glad to see the girls again. My tower is just a trifle lonely; when nine people occupy a house that was built for four hundred, they do rattle around a bit.

Eleven pages--poor Daddy, you must be tired! I meant this to be just a short little thank-you note--but when I get started I seem to have a ready pen.

Goodbye, and thank you for thinking of me--I should be perfectly happy except for one little threatening cloud on the horizon. Examinations come in February.

Everyday Life in America

Introduction

Every country has different everyday ways. To get to know Americans, it pays to know certain mannerisms and habits most Americans share.

Greetings. Americans shake hands firmly with each other when first introduced, or when they meet again, but rarely when they part (a more European custom). Social kissing, as a greeting, is also sometimes acceptable between men and women who know each other well and between women. American men rarely embrace each other or kiss on both cheeks.

Distance and Eye Contact. When two Americans are standing and talking to each other they stay at least 16 inches away from each other, yet they do make eye contact.


Etiquette and Behavior

Introductions. If you meet someone you know on the street while you are with someone else, it is polite to introduce the people to each other.

Foreign Languages. If you are with a group of mainly English-speaking people and the conversation is going on in English, it is not polite to speak in your own or another foreign language for more than a few sentences. Whatever language you speak in, try to avoid swear words. Of course, you should avoid "dirty," "off-color," or sexually explicit stories or jokes.

If you are in a movie theater or at a concert or play, it is never polite to talk during the performance, even in a whisper.


Formal and Informal Events

Social events and parties can pose bewildering problems for Americans and foreigners alike. You'll have to determine how formal the party or event is, what kind of food or drink will be served (if any), whether or not a gift is expected, and, if so, what type of gift is appropriate.

Formal and Informal. For some people and in some regions, "informal" means blue jeans and T-shirts. For some others, it can mean sports jackets and ties. It pays to ask specific questions about how you should dress when someone invites you ("Do I need to wear a dress? jacket and tie?"). Even if informal clothing is in order, keep your clothes clean. The phrase "formal" (also referred to as "Black Tie") means tuxedos for men and evening dresses for women.


Bringing Gifts

If you are invited to someone's home for dinner, you may bring a small gift like a bottle of wine, candy or flowers. If there is no special occasion, a very expensive gift might embarrass the host or hostess.

Bringing Refreshments

Some parties are "pot luck" or "covered dish" affairs. The idea is that everybody brings something. Sometimes the person giving the party will assign various types of food (breads, beverages, pasta, dessert) to different people to assure a variety. If a party is given on a B.Y.O.B. basis (it means "bring your own bottle") you'll be expected to bring a beverage, often alcoholic.

Card and Game Parties

Card and game parties are common in America. Bridge and poker are the two most popular card games, usually played for money, though often for very small amounts. Men's poker nights and women's bridge nights on a regular or weekly basis are common (though mixed groups also play these games). Americans may also invite you to a get-together to play "parlor games" such as charades, or commercial boxed games such as perennial favorite Monopoly.


Entertaining Outside

Americans like to entertain outside in good weather, either in back-yard barbecues or at picnics. For any get-together, it is perfectly polite to ask "May I bring something?" Even if they say "no", bring something tasteful like a delicacy or a fine candy.


Celebrations

Should you be asked to someone's birthday, retirement or graduation celebration, just ask if gifts are going to be given to the person honored. Again, even if the answer is "no" you can bring something small and tasteful. When Americans give gifts, they often enclose a signed gift card.


Showers and Weddings

If you are invited to a wedding, a "bridal shower" or a "baby shower," you will be expected to bring a substantial gift. The "showers" are gift-giving events. If you need to buy a wedding gift, there is a peculiar--and very practical--American custom you should know about: the "bridal registry." The couple to be married will register at a particular store, choosing the household goods, china, silver and other items they would like. You can then contact that store and purchase one of the items, knowing all the time that you'll be getting the couple something they really want, instead of their fourth automatic toaster. Many registries of this type are now computerized, and some are appearing on the Internet.

Being a Good Guest

Don't overstay your welcome. Whenever you are invited somewhere, try to find out in advance how long the event will last. It is also important not to be late. If it is a large party-- not a sit-down dinner party--you might have flexibility of an hour or two as to when you may arrive.


When You Entertain

When you entertain Americans in your own home, treat them as they would treat you. Offer them something to eat or drink. Offer to take their coats and hang them up somewhere properly and neatly. Take them on a short tour of your home and make sure they see where the toilets are located so they don't have to ask you when that critical moment arrives-- Americans are often embarrassed to ask.

Manners

Table manners are important in America, and may be different from those of your country. They are complicated, and you should consult a good guide to etiquette for a complete view.


In general Americans try to eat neatly, without making a lot of noise. If something on the table is out of their reach, they politely ask someone to pass it to them. Food should be lifted up to the mouth. Do not bend over to eat it. Sit up as straight as you can without being uncomfortable. Do not talk with your mouth full.

Table napkins are placed on your lap, folded in half if they are very large. If you are in a small group, it is polite to wait to start eating until the host sits down and begins. With larger groups, you may begin after noting that a few people have begun. You may also begin if the host urges you to.

Use your fork, knife and spoon to eat your food. There are some exceptions, like lobster and corn on the cob, cookies, shrimp, and fried chicken and other foods. Better watch what other people do. If you do eat with your hands, don't lick your fingers to clean them. Use the napkin carefully. If you have to take food out of your mouth, such as a pit or bone, do it carefully and quietly. It is not polite to pick your teeth at the table to remove trapped food. If you must do this before the end of the meal, excuse yourself and go to the restroom.


Making Conversation

Americans can become fairly intimate and personal in conversation, though controversial subjects like sex, religion, and politics are often best avoided, at least until you get a good idea of the views of the people you are talking to.


It is permissible for an American to start a conversation with a stranger but the conversation should be immediately ended if the person does not seem to want to talk. Be especially careful not to force your attention on someone in a plane, train or bus.

An accepted conversation starter is "What do you do?" meaning "What do you do for a living?" "Do you have any brothers or sisters?" is also a safe question. Americans also love to talk about their children. Since Americans are not particularly open about the subject of death, you will want to make sure a person's parents are alive before referring to them or asking about them.

Some Americans can spend a great deal of time in casual social circumstances talking about astrology. You can be sure that sooner or later you will be asked "What's your sign?" in a friendly manner. If you don't know your "sign" you can find it in any newspaper's astrology column. Even if you don't believe in astrology, it is often a good, non-controversial subject of conversation among people who do not know each other well.

Unless you know an American very well, it is not a good idea to criticize American society, apparent social injustices in America, or American ways of doing things. Americans usually think their way of doing things is either the best way or the only way. They have little exposure to or knowledge of other cultures. You might be 100% right in your criticism, but you won't get the point across to someone unwilling to consider it. In a social setting with people you have just met, starting such a political argument is undiplomatic. With people you already know, you can take some chances with controversial subjects.

If someone starts a conversation with you on a subject you consider tactless, improper or offensive, it is best to try to change the subject rather than making the problem worse by asking the other person embarrassing or personal questions. Don't lower yourself to the other person's level.


Accepting Compliments

If someone pays you a compliment, do not protest or deny the truth of the statement (as is required in many other cultures). Accept the compliment graciously and with thanks.

Usual subjects; feelings (excitement, nervousness, anger, love/hatred); natural events (storm, wind, fire); sounds (music, voices, noises).

2. to come about – to happen, to occur, to be caused


Usual subjects: events (accident, death, failure/success, defeat); situations (problem, discussion, argument).


This idiom is most often used in a How-question, when we want to know the cause of something.

The argument came about because they were talking about politics.


 


3. to stand out – to be noticeable, to be prominent, to be clearly seen


Usual subjects: color, tone, figure, shape; people


With this subject, there is a contrast with something else.

4. to break down – to fail to function, to stop working properly.

This idiom is usually used in a polite command form or in indirect speech. It is commonly used when asking someone to wait on the telephone.

Unusual: He held on before he left.


It is usually followed by a time expression such as “a second, a minute”.

9. to open up – to talk honestly and freely; to reveal a secret.

This idiom basically means that one doesn't hide his true feelings.


Their marriage plans fell through because neither one of them could ever open up to the other.

10. to come up – to arise


Usual subjects: a problem, question, issue


A serious problem came up after the project had been started.

Indirect Speech - Reported Speech

Reported Speech - Indirect Speech


Indirect Speech (also referred to as 'reported speech') refers to a sentence reporting what someone has said. It is almost always used in spoken English.


•  If the reporting verb (i.e. said) is in the past, the reported clause will be in a past form. This form is usually one step back into the past from the original.


For example:


•  He said the test was difficult.


•  She said she watched TV every day.


•  Jack said he came to school every day.


•  If simple present, present perfect or the future is used in the reporting verb (i.e. says) the tense is retained.


For example:


•  He says the test is difficult.


•  She has said that she watches TV every day.


•  Jack will say that he comes to school every day.


•  If reporting a general truth the present tense will be retained.


For example: The teacher said that phrasal verbs are very important.


Changing Pronouns and Time Signifiers


When changing from direct speech to indirect speech, it is often necessary to change the pronouns to match the subject of the sentence.


For example:


•  She said, "I want to bring my children." BECOMES She said she wanted to bring her children.


•  Jack said, "My wife went with me to the show." BECOMES Jack said his wife had gone with him to the show.


It is also important to change time words (signifiers) when referring to present, past or future time to match the moment of speaking.


For example:


•  She said, "I want to bring my children tomorrow." BECOMES She said she wanted to bring her children the next day.


•  Jack said, "My wife went with me to the show yesterday." BECOMES Jack said his wife had gone with him to the show the day before.


Indirect Questions


When reporting questions, it is especially important to pay attention to sentence order. When reporting yes/ no questions connect the reported question using 'if'. When reporting questions using question words (why, where, when, etc.) use the question word.


For example:


•  She asked, "Do you want to come with me?" BECOMES She asked me if I wanted to come with her.


•  Dave asked, "Where did you go last weekend?" BECOMES Dave asked me where I had gone the previous weekend.


•  He asked, "Why are you studying English?" BECOMES She asked me why I was studying English.

Education in America

Colleges and Universities
Some Definitions. The terms "college" and "university" are often used interchangeably. A university is a larger institution often having more than one college, law, medical, and dental schools, or business or other specialized schools. The term "campus" refers to the land the college sits on and the buildings on it. Colleges range from huge state-supported university systems, to small "liberal arts" and religious schools.
Two year colleges, often called community colleges, usually award the Associate of Arts degree (A.A.). They accept most applicants, are often public supported, and have lower tuition than four-year schools.

Four year colleges, called "undergraduate" schools, form the mainstream of American "higher education." Admission requirements, courses offered, residence facilities and other features will vary widely. These colleges give "bachelors" degrees, usually a bachelor of arts (B.A.) or a bachelor of science (B.S.).

Private colleges can be extremely expensive. Students with financial difficulties have access to a well-developed system of financial aid, however, which can dramatically reduce costs through a combination of grants, loans, and work-study programs.

Types of Colleges. The most prestigious colleges in the eastern part of the United States--like Harvard, Princeton and Yale--are known as the "Ivy League" because of the characteristic ivy plants that frequently grow on the sides of their beautiful old buildings. (The term "Ivy League" also refers to the type of people who have traditionally attended such universities, as well as certain clothing styles associated with them.) Other colleges, especially some of the large state schools, are known as football or basketball schools due to their emphasis on athletics. Most colleges are co-educational ("co-ed"), meaning that they accept both men and women, though many single-sex colleges still exist. (The term "a co-ed" refers to a female student at a co-educational college. It is not popular with feminists.)

Colleges and universities with religious affiliations are widely found in America. Some, though not all, give or require religious instruction along with academic subjects. Most major religious groups in America have their own systems of sponsored colleges.


Colleges are Bureaucratic
All colleges are bureaucratic. You'll have to learn how to satisfy their rules in order to assure admission, financial aid, or academic survival after enrollment. High school guidance counselors can advise students about all this. The college's admission office can also be very helpful. Foreign students should be especially careful about deadlines since getting transcripts and translations of foreign educational records can add extra time to the admissions process. The best advice: plan ahead.
Courses of Study
Undergraduate colleges vary widely, but most require certain core courses (like mathematics, science, English literature and a foreign language) plus a "major". If you were an "economics major," for example, you would take your required core courses, then a certain number of required courses in economics. You would fill out the rest of your college education with "elective" courses, which you choose according to your own interests. Most colleges allow students to major in common areas such as English, philosophy, political science and mathematics. A student who wants to major in a more obscure subject, like oceanography or Bolivian-Belgian relations, has a more limited choice of potential schools.
The American College Credit System
Over the four years, students are required to take a certain minimum number of course hours (credits), usually 128. Each school year is divided into two semesters: the fall semester and the spring semester. Summer sessions exist for students who wish to make up for failed work or accelerate their academic progress. Thus the student will take 32 credits each year, or 16 per semester. An individual course might be 2, 3, 4 or more credits, depending on the number of hours of instruction per week. Courses could require examinations, the writing of term papers, or both, depending on the school and the individual professor teaching the course. A college class in America could have anywhere from three to three hundred students.
State University Systems
State university systems are often huge, and you might find certain classes so big, that some students have to watch the lectures on closed-circuit TV in the hallways. Unlike public elementary and secondary schools, they are not free, though tuition is lower than for private colleges, especially for in-state students. All state university systems are feeling the cost crunch; they are getting more expensive. The best state university systems, like those of New York and California, are as highly regarded as many of the finest private colleges. More than three-fourths of all college students attend state or public universities.
Distance Learning
Distance learning, particularly over the Internet, has become increasingly popular. Most major universities have instituted some kind of distance learning program in which students do not have to be physically present on campus to take their classes and earn their degrees.
Social Life and Sports
College social life is an important part of the university experience. College dormitories, now often co-ed, may operate as independent communities. College athletic rivalries bring students together under one cause--to beat the other school. Fraternities (for men) and sororities (for women), are special clubs of college students. They customarily identify themselves by using combinations of ancient Greek letters. These organizations may provide housing for their members, hold dances and social events, and frequently have exotic (and sometimes dangerous) initiation procedures. Some colleges do not allow fraternities and sororities.
College sports can be big business for the institutions concerned, especially in football and basketball. There have been occasional recruiting scandals in which supporters of college teams have illegally given money to promising high school athletes in order to convince them to play for particular schools.
Culture. In many communities, colleges act as cultural and entertainment centers, providing everything from art shows and ballets to film and theater festivals. Life on a college campus can be vital. Many Americans prize their college years the most fun they ever had. Others take the college experience quite seriously.

Back handed compliment - A compliment that also insults or puts down at the same time.
Back-handed is synonymous with left-handed. For example in tennis, a backhand stroke is a strike by a right-handed player from the left side of the body.
The left side of the body has always been deemed sinister. The Latin word for left is sinister. Hence, back-handed means round-about, indirect, or devious.

2- He is a true workaholic who has misguided priorities, when he wants to blow off some steam he comes to work on Saturday wearing blue jeans.
Blow off some steam= To enjoy oneself by relaxing normal formalities. "Blowing off steam" prevents explosions by relieving the pressure in a boiler by venting excess steam and pressure.
Boilers are commonly used in steam heating systems and steam engines such as those used in a steam locomotive. The boilers contain water that is heated by burning some fuel such as oil. The heated water turns to steam, which is then sent through a system of radiators (in the case of heating systems) or harnessed by a steam engine.
The steam creates considerable pressure in the boiler. If the pressure becomes too great, there is a danger of the boiler exploding. Hence boilers are equipped with safety valves called blow off valves that open if the pressure becomes to great.

Blowing smoke= To be boasting without being able to back it up, talking about action without intent to follow through
Magicians often use smoke in their performance to obscure your view and conceal a bit of trickery.
A person who is "blowing smoke" is tricking you and attempting to cover it up.

5- You might as well junk that car, the engine is dead as a door nail.
Dead as a door nail= To be dead, with no chance for recovery.
Nails were once hand tooled and costly. When an aging cabin or barn was torn down the valuable nails would be salvaged so they could be reused in later construction.
When building a door however, carpenters often drove the nail through then bent it over the other end so it couldn't work its way out during the repeated opening and closing of the door. When it came time to salvage the building, these door nails were considered useless, or "dead" because of the way they were bent.

6- You and your father are cut from the same cloth; fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life son.
Cut from the same cloth = To be similar, usually in terms of behavior.
If you're making a suit, the jacket and trousers should be cut from the same piece of cloth to ensure a perfect match, since there may be differences in color, weave etc. between batches of fabric. Only if the whole suite is cut from the same piece of cloth can we be sure of the match.
7- It's time to face the music on your donut addiction.
Face the music= To accept the truth.
Comes from the British military. When someone was court marshaled, there would be a military drum squad playing, hence face the music. The term "drummed out of the military" came from this practice....

High on the hog= Extravagantly.
The best meat is on the upper portion of the pig. Rich people have always been afforded this luxury while the servants, slaves and poor have always had to eat pig's feet, chitterlings, cracklings, etc. - low on the hog.

Dr Paul Dennison began researching as founder and director of the Valley Remedial Group Learning Centres in California. During this time he studied the sensory integration work of Newell Kephart and Jean Ayres, he worked with Dr Louis Jacque, a leading pioneer in vision training. For his Doctoral Dissertation he drew on brain research including that of Sperry and Ornstein to research the relationship of covert speech to the acquisition of beginning reading skills. He also researched “kinesiology” the science of body movement and the relationship of muscles and posture to brain function.
Brain Gym ® is a movement based programme which retrace developmental movements that a child will naturally do as part of their growth when there is no stress, injury or interruption. Children are born with a fully developed physical brain but only partially developed neurological connections. As they progress through childhood they make these connections through movement “developmental stages” such as crawling which develops simultaneous use of both cerebral hemispheres for integrated use of the senses and whole body movement. Sometimes these stages are not completed or missed due to stress, lack of movement in early years, illness or reflexes which have not been fully activated, developed or integrated.
Brain Gym Concepts
Specific body movements stimulate particular aspects of brain function. An example is "Dennison Laterality Repatterning", (taught only in the Brain Gym ® Course) which achieves neurological integration between the vestibular system, the gross-motor movements of the cerebellum, and the basal ganglia, as well as equal activation of the left and right hemispheres of the neocortex - particularly the sensory cortex of the parietal and motor cortex of the frontal lobes. Stress can inhibit learning
Under stress, activity in the mind/body system is centred in the sympathetic nervous system, which prepares the body for fight/flight (aggression/fear) reaction. As a result, activity in the limbic system, and in the neocortex of the cerebrum, are minimised.
In addition, the learner who is stressed in a learning situation can go into a homolateral learning state, in which the dominant brain hemisphere takes over most mental processes. As a result, the learner may no longer have full access to the functions of the non-dominant hemisphere. One-sided learning can occur, thus affecting performance.

The Brain Gym® movements consciously activate the whole mind body system, stimulating nervous-system activity equally in all parts of the brain and lessening the flight/fight reaction. When learning is easy and stress-free the learner regains his/her innate interest in learning and is again motivated to achieve learning goals.
